Eddie Murphy plays Akeem Joffer, the crown prince of the wealthy African nation of Zamunda, who comes to the United States in the hopes of finding a woman he can marry. Crown prince Akeem Joffer grows weary of his pampered lifestyle on his 21st birthday and wishes to do more for himself. When his parents, King Jaffe and Queen Aeoleon, present him with an arranged bride-to-be, Akeem takes action. Seeking an independent woman who loves him for himself and not his social status, Akeem and his best friend/personal aide, Semmi, travel to the New York City borough of Queens and rent a squalid tenement in the neighborhood of Long Island City under the guise of poor foreign students.

Eddie Murphy (Prince Akeem, Randy Watson, Saul and Clarence). Played Prince Akeem, the spoiled prince of Zamunda who had never once tied his own shoes. Along with playing Akeem, Murphy plays three other characters, with the comedian taking on other roles in what would become a hallmark of his films. Arsenio Hall (Reverend Brown, Morris the Barber, Female Clubgoer). In Coming to America, comedian Arsenio Hall played Akeem’s right-hand man, Semmi. Semmi dislikes the American lifestyle and certainly prefers living like a king in the fictional country of Zamunda. Like Murphy, Hall played other roles, taking on the parts of Reverend Brown, Morris the barber and the female clubgoer who hits on Semmi and Akeem. He's 62 years

James Earl Jones (King Jaffe Joffer of Zamunda). Prince Akeem’s father, King Jaffe Joffer, is played by James Earl Jones. The king is a traditionalist and longs for his son to have an arranged marriage. He's now 87 years old.

John Amos (Cleo McDowell). John Amos played the protective father of Lisa, Akeem’s love interest. He owns the restaurant McDowell’s, the film's version of Mc

Shari Headley (Lisa McDowell). Lisa is the oldest daughter of Cleo McDowell. Akeem instantly feels an attraction to her, but she has a boyfriend, Darryl Jenks, keeping them apart. Once Lisa and Akeem start dating, he tells her that he comes from a poor family to make sure she loves him for him. She's 55 years old
